He Keeps CovenantIsaiah 54:10

The Mountains Would Have to Move First

This message is for the man who stood in what was left of his roof after the storm and promised God his hands belonged to whoever needed rebuilding, who worked three weeks and then stopped, and has believed ever since that he forfeited something

He was standing on what used to be the floor of his own front room, and there was sky where the ceiling had been, and about four inches of water and leaves and somebody else's roofing over everything.

Nobody had died. That was the first thing and it kept being the first thing for about two weeks, the way it does: nobody died, so what is there to complain about.

He stood in that room on the second morning with a rake in his hands and he said it out loud, to God, over the noise of a generator two houses down:

These hands are Yours. Whoever needs it, that is where I am. For as long as it takes.

And he meant it the way a man means things at seven in the morning in four inches of water.

He worked three weeks. He was good at it and he was everywhere, and there are people on that road who will tell you what he did in those three weeks and they will get emotional telling you.

Then he stopped. There was no incident. He went back to work, and the insurance thing took over his evenings, and his own house needed him, and somewhere in the fourth week the calls thinned and then he stopped answering them, and after that he could not answer them, because by then answering would have meant explaining.

That was two years ago. The road is rebuilt. And when he drives it he feels a specific thing, which is not guilt exactly. It is the sense of having handed something over and then quietly taken it back, and of that being a category of act with consequences.

You may have a road. A season where you gave something away out loud and then took it back without announcing it. And what sits on you is not what you did. It is the taking back.

The Mountains Would Have to Move First

What would have to happen first

I want to show you a sentence God speaks to a people who had been given away and taken back more times than anyone could count, and it works by comparison.

He does not say the covenant is strong. He picks two things you cannot imagine moving and puts them on one side of a scale.

For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.Isaiah 54:10

You are standing on ground that outlasts the mountains, and three weeks never got near it. Isaiah 54:10 puts the hills in the queue ahead of His kindness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept that ground steady while you avoided a road.

The mountains go first

Read what He has actually done there.

He has made the permanence of His covenant the more reliable of two things, and the thing it is more reliable than is the mountains. Not a promise. Not a system. The mountains, which are the standard human image for something that does not move.

So the sentence is an ordering. If you want to see the covenant of His peace removed, you have to get the mountains out of the way first, and the hills after them, and only then does the queue reach the thing you have been worried about since the fourth week.

You are held inside something that outlasts the mountains, and your three weeks did not get anywhere near it. Isaiah 54:10 is where that is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it off a page about a nation and puts it in a man's chest as he drives a rebuilt road.

And then the last clause, which is the one people skip because it sounds like a formula. Saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.

He signs it. He names Himself in the sentence, and He names Himself by the thing He does, not by His power. Not the LORD who is able. The LORD that hath mercy on thee, present tense, while you are reading it, while you are still the man who stopped answering.

You have a covenant signed by someone who identifies Himself by His mercy toward you specifically. That is the plain reading of the last clause of Isaiah 54:10, and the Spirit of God is the one who has been making that name true in your life for two years of you avoiding a road.

Given and taken back

Now the honest part, because this category holds terms and does not blur them.

You did take it back. I am not going to pretend the fourth week was nothing, or tell you that intentions are what counts, because you have been on a road with a rake in your hand and you know exactly how little intentions weigh next to two hands actually turning up.

There are real terms here for you: to come, to stay, to be where you are needed. Those are yours and they are genuine, and this article is not telling you your choices do not matter.

What it is telling you is which of the two things collapsed. Your side of it did. His did not, and it was never leaning on yours. You are standing on ground that has not moved, and the only thing that gave way in the fourth week was your part of the work. Scripture puts His kindness and the covenant of His peace on one side and the mountains on the other, and the Spirit of God is the one who has kept that ground steady while you have been treating a rake as a foundation.

And the difference matters, because a man who thinks he broke the ground will never step back onto it. A man who knows he dropped the work can pick the work back up when he is asked, from a place where he is already standing.

The breakthrough

So here is what is true, standing in what is left of that room, before you say a word.

You are held inside the covenant this evening, and the three weeks were never what was holding it in place. Isaiah 54:10 puts the mountains in the queue ahead of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about one man on one road rather than a beautiful line about a nation.

And hear what is not being asked of you. You have permission to come back in with your hands empty and no work started. Nothing written puts a shift on a rebuild between a man and the door, and the Spirit of God is not asking you to promise a season tonight, because a promise made under shame is only the next thing to be taken back.

Whatever He does about your hands after this is His to decide. Somebody may knock this month. He may want something else entirely. That is His call and it is not the price of the door.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, once, and let the last one be the last thing said in that room. You are in Christ, and what you are standing on is His faithfulness and not the strength of anything you said over a generator; it was given to you and it did not lapse in the fourth week. It rests on what is written and it is carried by His Spirit. Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart will have what he says, and the mountain here is the idea that taking something back can move ground God laid. Speak to it. Whatever He does with your hands after this is His to decide, and it is not the price of the door.

  1. Hands I gave away and took back again, you were promised and you were pulled, and I hand that over now in the name of Jesus. It is written that the mountains would depart before His kindness departs and His covenant of peace is removed, and His Spirit is the one who has been holding that ground steady.
  2. Fourth week when I stopped answering, you are a thing that happened and you are not the ground under me. Scripture puts the hills in the queue ahead of this covenant, so nothing I dropped got anywhere near it, and the Spirit of God has kept the whole of it while I avoided a road.
  3. Lord, You call Yourself the one who has mercy on me, and You signed that sentence with Your own name. I come back in as a man standing on ground and not a man who cracked it, and I bring You no new season tonight, only the word You gave.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
