The Day I Assumed It Was Void

There were four days at the end and she was there for all of them, and she said nothing.

She had promised God on the first of those days, in the corridor outside, with her coat still on, that she would say it before he went. Dad, I forgive you. Six words. She had been carrying them for nineteen years and she had come to that hospital to put them down.

Day one she thought there would be a better moment. Day two he was mostly asleep. Day three his sister was in the room the whole afternoon and she told herself she could not do it in front of her. Day four she held his hand for two hours and said nothing at all, and at about six in the evening he stopped breathing, and the six words are still in her.

That was five years ago.

And here is what she did on the drive home from that hospital, which she has never told anybody: she decided it was over. Not the relationship with her father, which was over in a different way. The other thing. The whole arrangement with God. She had been given four days, which is more than most people get, and she had been asked for one sentence, and she did not say it, and on the way home she concluded that whatever she had with God had been voided by that.

She still goes to church. She sings. She is on the rota for the coffee. And inside she is a woman who considers herself outside, and she has considered herself outside for five years without ever once telling anybody, because how would you say that out loud.

You may have a day like that. A single thing you had every opportunity to do, and did not do, and something in you filed the whole account as closed. Nobody told you it was closed. You ruled on it yourself, and then you started living under your own ruling.

Who has the authority to void it

Let me start with the question nobody asks, because it is the one that unlocks this.

When you decided it was over, on what authority did you decide?

That is not a rhetorical trick. It is a real question and it has a real answer, and the answer is: none. You are not a party who can terminate this. You did not draft it, you did not sign it into being, and the fact that you were the one who failed does not make you the one who gets to rule on the consequences. A tenant who breaks a window does not thereby become the landlord.

Come to the shortest and most load bearing sentence in Malachi, spoken to people who had been failing for generations and knew it.

For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.Malachi 3:6

You are still standing, and the reason given is entirely on His side of the sentence. Malachi 3:6 puts a therefore between I change not and ye are not consumed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has held you inside it since the night you decided you were out.

Therefore

That word in the middle is doing everything.

He does not say: I do not change, and separately, you are still here. He puts a therefore between them. The reason you have not been consumed, the whole reason, the only reason offered, is that He does not change.

Which means that the continuation of the sons of Jacob is not evidence of the sons of Jacob. It is evidence of God. And if you are still here, still turning this over, still on the rota for the coffee and still aching about six words, that is not a sign that your failure was small. It is a sign that He did not move.

You are still standing this morning, and the reason is entirely on His side of the sentence. Malachi 3:6 says it in that order and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it out of a complaint against a nation and lays it on a woman in a foyer with a cup in her hand.

And now the honest part, because this category refuses to be sentimental. A covenant has terms. God says what He is and what He does, and He also says come and turn and speak and forgive. Your choices are real and they matter and they are not decoration.

But the terms never said: and if you fail, this is void. That is the sentence you added. And you added it on a drive home in the worst week of your life, which is exactly the hour when a person should not be handing down rulings about their own standing.

You have been living under a judgment that you wrote and He never signed. Scripture says it in so many words, and that is the plain force of I change not standing next to a people who had every reason to expect otherwise, and the Spirit of God has been holding you inside it for five years while you told yourself you were outside.

What was settled and what is still yours

So let me divide it cleanly, because a woman who has been holding six words for nineteen years deserves to be told exactly where she stands.

Settled, and not by you: that He does not change. That the covenant stands. That the four days did not amend it. That your father's death did not close a file with God, because God does not keep the file you think He keeps.

Yours, and really yours: to come back in. To stop enforcing a ruling nobody made. And then, from inside, whatever He puts in front of you about your father, which may be forgiveness spoken to an empty room, and which is a real thing to do and not a nothing.

What is not yours: making it valid again. It did not become invalid. There is nothing to restore.

You are being invited to walk back in, and the walking in is your part and the door being open is not. Scripture divides those two exactly that way, and His Spirit is the one who has kept the second one true through five years of you refusing the first.
