The Elder Who Vouched for Me

The thing about being vouched for is that somebody else spends their credit on you, and there is no way to pay it back that does not involve becoming the person they said you were.

He was twenty seven and there had been trouble, and the details of it are not going here, and that is not evasion, it is how this site works: an inventory is a courtroom with the chairs rearranged.

What matters is that there was a gathering and it was serious, and an old man who had known his family for fifty years stood up and spoke for him. Not warmly. Precisely. He said what he had seen in this young man and what he expected of him, and he put his own standing behind it, in front of everybody, which is a thing that costs an old man something in a place where a word is the whole currency.

And then the young man stood up and said what he would do. He was specific. He named it.

He did none of it.

Six years ago. And the old man has never said one word about it, to him or to anybody, which is exactly what makes it unbearable. If he had said something it could have been argued with. Instead there is a silence with a shape, and the shape is the shape of a man who spent something and did not get it back.

He has not been to that ground in six years. He tells people it is work.

You may have somebody who spent something on you. Not somebody you disappointed, which is ordinary. Somebody who put their own name down beside yours and then had to walk around a community carrying what you did.

The arithmetic God uses

Now let me put a line in front of you from Isaiah, and the whole force of it is in a single word of quantity.

He is speaking to people whose humiliation was public and communal and generational, which is to say it was the sort of shame that everybody in a place carries and nobody discusses.

For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them.Isaiah 61:7

You are inside an accounting where the shame is the measure of the portion and not a deduction from it. Isaiah 61:7 says for your shame ye shall have double, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has held your standing steady while you stayed off that ground.

Double

Not: your shame will be forgiven. Not: your shame will be forgotten. For your shame, double.

That is an accounting sentence and it does not do what accounting sentences do. If a man has lost standing, the most you would expect is restoration to par: he gets back what he had, and everybody agrees to move on. God does not offer par. He offers twice, and the doubling is specifically indexed to the shame, so that the more there was of the one, the more there is of the other.

You are inside an arithmetic where the shame is the measure of the portion and not a deduction from it. Isaiah 61:7 is where that is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it out of a promise to a humiliated people and stands it beside a man who has stayed off his own ground for six years.

Now let me be honest about the old man, because he is the reason you are still standing at the back.

He spent something. That is true and I am not going to make it smaller. In a place where a word is the currency, an old man's word is his whole estate, and he put some of it behind a young man and lost it, and he has walked around a community for six years carrying that.

But look at what you have done with the loss. You have taken a debt owed to God, which was never owed to God because God does not lend, and moved it sideways onto a human being, where it becomes a debt that can actually be tracked and never actually be paid. And that is the cleverest trap available to a man in your position, because it looks exactly like honor.

You have moved a settled account onto a man's shoulders and called it respect. Scripture puts the whole exchange between God and the ashamed and offers double, and the Spirit of God has been holding your standing steady through six years of it being called work.

What the old man cannot do

And here is the part I want you to sit with, because it is the hinge.

That man cannot settle you. He does not have the office. Even if you went to him tomorrow and he took your hand and said it was nothing, it would not settle you, and you know that, which is part of why you have not gone. You are not staying away because you fear his verdict. You are staying away because you know his verdict cannot do the job, and a trip that cannot fix it is worse than no trip.

You are right about that. He cannot fix it. Nobody at that gathering can, and no amount of becoming the person he said you were would either, because the account was never with him.

You are settled by the one who has the office to settle you, and that was never a man with a good name. The word puts it plainly, and that is the plain sense of God offering double to the ashamed rather than arranging an apology, and His Spirit is the one who has done it.
