The bus goes past it. That is the whole difficulty of her life at the moment, in one sentence: the number 4 goes past the end of that road twice a day, and she looks, and then she does not look.
They took her in when she was nineteen and knew nobody. Somebody called Pauline noticed her standing by the door on her second Sunday and asked her to lunch and then kept asking, for four years, every single week, and there was a Tuesday group and there was a rota she was on and there was a group chat with forty seven messages a day about who was bringing what.
In her final year, on a night when everything had gone wrong at once and Pauline's kitchen was the only warm place in the city, she said to God on the walk home:
I will never miss a Sunday there. Whatever job I get, wherever I live. That is my church.
She got a job in the same town. Eleven minutes away.
She stopped the month she graduated. There was no falling out. There was a new office and a new set of people and a Sunday that became the day for sleeping, and then it had been three months, and then it had been a year, and then it was five years and she was a woman who lived eleven minutes from a church she used to belong to.
And here is what she believes now, which she has never said out loud: that she has been reclassified. That there is a list somewhere, not a real one, but a real one, and she has been moved from the one that says ours to the one that says came for a while. She could go on a Sunday. People would be nice. Somebody would say it is good to see you, and mean it, and she would be a visitor being welcomed, which is a different species of thing from a member arriving.
You may have been reclassified too. Nobody did it to you. You did it, quietly, in your own head, on the basis of no evidence, and you have been living under the reclassification ever since.

How many categories are there
Let me do the thing I do, which is check whether the idea in your head is actually in the book.
Because you have three categories: member, visitor, and the one you invented, which is former. And the whole weight of your Sunday morning sits on that third one.
Paul is writing to people who had every reason to think of themselves as former, or as never, or as at best tolerated guests in somebody else's house. And this is his sentence.
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.Ephesians 2:19
You are in the household this morning, and no fourth category was ever created for people who went quiet. Ephesians 2:19 gives two words for outside and two for inside and nothing in between, and the Holy Spirit is the one who sealed it, which Paul says two verses later.
Count them
Stranger. Foreigner. Fellow citizen and household.
That is the list. Two words for outside, two words for inside, and there is no third position between them, and there is no annex where you go if you were inside and then went quiet for five years.
I want you to feel how strange that is, because everything human runs on the middle category. Every gym, every club, every profession, has a lapsed tier. There is always a status for the person who used to. And the reason is obvious and reasonable: human organizations run on participation, so when participation stops, standing changes.
The household of God does not run on participation. It runs on birth and on blood and on adoption, and none of those are attendance based, which is why Paul does not need a fourth word.
You are in the household this morning, and there was never a category available for what you think you became. Ephesians 2:19 is where that is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it out of a letter to Gentile converts and puts it on a woman riding the number 4.
And notice the word therefore at the front. It points backward. It means the standing rests on what was just described, which is Christ's own work, and not on anything the reader does with their Sundays.
You have a citizenship that was granted on the basis of somebody else's work entirely. It is written in exactly those terms, and that is what the therefore is doing in the sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who sealed it, which Paul says two verses later, so it is not my flourish, it is his.
What a visitor is, and why you are not one
Now let me deal with the thing you are actually dreading, which is not theology. It is the doorway.
You are dreading that somebody will say it is lovely to see you in the voice people use for guests. And you are right that it might happen, and you are right that it would sting, and I am not going to tell you that it would not.
But a person's greeting is not a status. Pauline saying it is lovely to see you does not reclassify you any more than your five years did. Nobody in that building has the authority to move your name, and that includes the person on the door, and it includes you.
You are a citizen who has been away and not a guest who has been invited. Scripture puts you in the household by the same act that put anybody in it, and His Spirit is the one bearing witness to that, whatever the first thirty seconds inside the door feel like.
And here is the warmth without the sentiment, which this category insists on: they were fine. The rota filled. The group chat carried on. Nobody has been sitting in the dark missing you, and I am not going to pretend they have in order to make you feel wanted, because you would hear it and it would make going back harder.
The place is not kept warm by grief. It is kept because it is yours.
So here is what is true on that bus, before you say a word.
You are held inside the household this morning, and your five years never moved you to a list that does not exist. Ephesians 2 gives two words for outside and two for inside and nothing in between, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a fact about a woman eleven minutes away rather than a line about Gentiles in the first century.
And hear what is not required. You have permission to walk in on Sunday as somebody arriving and not as somebody applying. Nothing written asks a returning woman to be reinstated before she is a citizen, and the Spirit of God is not asking you to explain the five years to anybody at the door, because the explanation was never the entry condition.
Whatever He does about the rota and the Tuesday group after this is His to decide, and other people get a say in that too, which is right. But it is not the price of the door.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, once, and let the last one be the last thing said. You are in Christ, and the standing you speak from is His work and not your attendance; it was given to you and it did not lapse the month you graduated. It rests on what is written and it is carried by His Spirit. Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart will have what he says, and the mountain here is a category you invented and then filed yourself under. Speak to it. Whatever He does about the rota and the Tuesday group is His to decide, and it is not the price of the door.
- Guest list I put myself on, you are not the register of this house and nobody moved my name. It is written that I am no more a stranger and a foreigner but a fellow citizen of the household of God, and in the name of Jesus I take my own seat, because His Spirit has kept it warm.
- Dread of the voice people use for visitors, you are not a ruling and no greeting has the power to reclassify me. Scripture gives two words for outside and two for inside and no third place at all, and the Spirit of God is the one bearing witness to which one I am in.
- Lord, You brought me in by Your own work and my Sundays were never what kept me here. I walk in as a citizen and not as an applicant, and I bring You no explanation, only the word You gave.
