He Went to Get the Room Ready

Six people, a front room, Thursday nights, a lamp on and never the big light.

That was the year she does not talk about. She had come apart in a way that frightened everybody, and those six had carried her in the most literal sense the phrase allows: a rota for meals, somebody sitting in her house until she fell asleep, one of them driving her to appointments she would not otherwise have attended.

On a Thursday in the February of that year she said out loud, in that circle, to God, that she would be in that room for the rest of her life. Not out of duty. She meant it as the most grateful sentence she had ever said.

She got well. It took a long time and then it happened faster than anybody expected, and she went back to work, and the Thursdays got harder to make, and by the autumn she was going once a month and by the spring she had stopped.

She did not tell them. That is the part. She let it thin out until it was gone, and then when one of them messaged she took a day to answer, and then two, and then it was easier for everybody if she just did not.

Four years.

And what she believes about herself is very specific, and I want to say it in her words because it is precise and it is cruel: leaving after being carried is the version of leaving that does not get forgiven. People leave churches. People drift. But there is a particular category for the person who was held up when she could not stand and who walked off the moment her legs worked, and that person does not get to come back and sit in the circle.

You may have your own version. A group, a family, a friend who did the hard part, and then you got well or got busy or got past it and you went, and now you cannot go back, because going back would mean facing the exact quality of what you did.

He said it to the ones who were about to leave

I want to take you to a sentence in John, and the reason I want to take you there is the timing, which nobody points out.

It is the same night as everything else. It is hours before every one of them goes. He has just told Peter, to his face, that he will deny Him three times before the rooster crows. That is the sentence immediately before this one. Read them in order and you will feel it.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.John 14:1-3

You are expected, and every verb in that promise belongs to the one making it. John 14:2 has Him going and preparing and coming again and receiving, spoken to men hours from leaving Him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept that room ready for four years.

I go to prepare a place for you

He says this to men who are about to leave Him at the worst possible moment, and He says it in the future tense of somebody making arrangements. I go. I prepare. I come again. I receive.

Every verb belongs to Him. There is not one thing in that sentence that the disciples do, and that is not an accident of phrasing, it is the entire consolation. If any of it had depended on them holding steady through the next eighteen hours, none of them would have had a place, because none of them held.

You have a place that somebody went ahead and got ready, and He did the going and the preparing and the receiving. John 14:2 is where that is written, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes it out of an upper room and puts it in a woman's front room four years later.

And notice what preparing means. It means the work happens in advance and out of your sight. A room that is prepared for you is a room somebody entered before you did, and put things in, and got ready, on the assumption that you were coming.

That is not a room that gets unprepared. Nobody prepares a room, waits, and then quietly takes the sheets off again after a reasonable period.

You are expected, and the preparation was done in advance by somebody who already knew about the four years. It is written in exactly those terms, and that is the plain sense of a place prepared, and the Spirit of God is the one who has kept it ready while you decided you had disqualified yourself from it.

The category that does not exist

Now let me go directly at the thing you believe, because it deserves to be named and then dismantled.

You believe there is a special class of leaving: the one where you were carried and then left. And you believe that class is not forgiven, not because God is petty, but because it is genuinely worse, and you are not asking for special treatment, you are simply looking at the facts.

Here is the trouble with that. Every single person in the upper room that night was in exactly that class. They had been carried for three years. Fed on a hillside, taught, defended, kept. And they went, all of them, within hours of being told what was coming.

And to those men He said: I go to prepare a place for you.

You are in the class of people this sentence was originally spoken to, and it was said before they left rather than after they came back. Scripture puts it in that order deliberately, and His Spirit has been holding you inside a promise made to the exact category you think you invented.

I will not tell you the six have been grieving. Some of them have been fine, some of them noticed and were hurt, and one of them probably still asks about you. That is a real mixture and I am not going to tidy it into something warmer than it is, because you would smell it.

What I am telling you is that the room in John 14 is not maintained by any of them, and the seat in that circle is not the same object as the place He prepared.
