The List God Never Wrote

This message is for the daughter back in the outpatients waiting room where she once promised God every Sunday and every morning if her father lived, adding a sixth condition to the list she has to clear before she is allowed back

The outpatients waiting room has the same blue chairs bolted together in rows, and the same corridor runs off it to the left, and she is not looking down that corridor.

Her father is beside her, doing the crossword badly and cheerfully, eighteen months on from the surgery. That is the miracle, and she knows it is the miracle, and she is glad every single day. But eighteen months ago she stood in that corridor to the left, by the vending machine that only takes coins, and she promised God out loud, whispering into her own hands, that if He let her dad live she would be in church every Sunday and in the Bible every morning for the rest of her life.

He lived. She kept it for eleven weeks.

Nothing dramatic ended it. A wet Sunday. A late night. Then a second one, and then a season, and then the shame of the gap was bigger than the pull of the room, and now it has been well over a year. So she has a list. It lives in her notes app, under a title with no name, and it has five things on it. Read the whole Bible through first. Go back to the same church, not a different one where it would be easier. Tell Dad what she promised. Get thirty days of the mornings back before she dares to call it real. Feel it, actually feel it, and not just decide it. And now, in the blue chair, with her father asking her for a seven letter word for regret, you open the app with your thumb without thinking, and you start typing a sixth.

You know this list. Not hers. Yours. It might not be in an app. It might be a sentence you have said so many times it sounds like doctrine: I have to get a few things right first. And here is the question I want to ask you gently, in the blue chair, while the name before yours is called. Who wrote it?

The List God Never Wrote

The handwriting is yours

Look at the list honestly, because it deserves that. Every item on it is a decent thing. Reading the Bible through is good. Going back to the same room is brave. None of it is wicked, and that is exactly what makes it dangerous, because a list of good things is the hardest kind to see for what it is. It is a set of entry requirements. It is a turnstile you built with your own hands and put in front of a door that God left standing open.

And it is in your handwriting. Not His.

Go back to what actually happened in that corridor. You made a promise. You broke it. Those are two real things and I will not shrink either of them. But somewhere between the breaking and now, a third thing happened that nobody noticed: you appointed yourself the doorkeeper of your own return, and you started writing terms. God did not write them. He was not consulted. He has never once seen the list and nodded.

But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.Deuteronomy 30:14

That is from the chapter about coming back. Not about starting; about returning, after everything has gone wrong and the people are scattered. And right in the middle of it God says: this is not too hard for you, and it is not far off. It is not up in heaven so that you would need somebody to climb up and fetch it. It is not across the sea so that you would need somebody to sail. It is in your mouth. You have the way back in your mouth right now, in the blue chair, and it is not at the end of a list. That is Scripture and not my optimism, and the Holy Spirit is the one who puts the word that close, near enough to say.

Paul picks up those exact lines and says what the near word is: it is the word of faith that we proclaim, that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:8-9). Not climb first. Confess. The mouth is the door, and it is already yours.

His terms were met before you made yours

Now the part that undoes the whole list. A covenant has terms. I will not pretend to you that it does not; that would be a lie told to make you comfortable, and you would feel the hollowness of it by tonight. God's covenant has terms and He is not casual about them. But here is what your list has quietly forgotten: you are inside a covenant whose terms were met by Somebody else, and Scripture says so in as many words. Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, and by His one offering He has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified (Hebrews 9:15, 10:14). The Holy Spirit is the one who was given as the guarantee of it, not your streak of mornings.

So the terms are His, and the terms are met, and the only question left is whether you will come in on them or keep standing outside on yours. Every item on your list is a term you invented to feel legitimate. And I am not going to swap them for better ones. Hear me on that, because a lot of kind people will hand you a shorter list, a more reasonable list, and it is still a list, and it is still a turnstile. There is no list. There is a door.

You were never the one holding the covenant up, so you were never the one who dropped it. He swore it, He keeps it, and if we are faithless He remains faithful, because He cannot deny Himself (2 Timothy 2:13). It is His written word, and His Spirit is the one making it warm in you as you read this, and there is nothing at that door but Him.

I know the list feels like humility. It is not. Humility walks in on His terms with nothing in its hands. The list is a way of walking in with something in your hands, and it keeps you outside for exactly as long as it takes to fill them, which is forever.

You are standing on terms that were satisfied before you ever drew up yours. Deuteronomy 30:14 puts the word very near, in the mouth and in the heart, so that it can be done rather than qualified for, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put it that close and has kept it there.

The breakthrough

So here is what is happening in this room, and it is happening now and not after the sixth item. The list is yours. God did not write it, and He does not read it, and He is not waiting at the end of it. He is at the door, and the door is a door and not a tribunal, and the word you need is not up a mountain or across the sea. It is in your mouth. You are inside on His terms the moment you say so, because His terms are already met in Christ, and the Holy Spirit is present as you read this to carry the word from your mouth to the covenant it belongs to. That is what is written, and it was written for people who had wandered and were coming home.

Nothing about the covenant changed while you were away. Not one term. He did not add a probation clause. You did.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing, with the crossed-out paper in front of you. You have the standing to speak, and it does not come from having finished the list. Christ is in you, and the authority to say His covenant over yourself is delegated to you in His name, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries the words. Jesus said whoever says to the mountain, be lifted up and cast into the sea, and believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. Says. So speak, to the list and to the fear, and speak it under His will and not yours, since what He does with your mornings and your Sundays after tonight is His to decide, and the covenant was never yours to hold up.

  1. List in my notes app, you are my handwriting and not His terms. Scripture says the word is not in heaven or over the sea but in my mouth, and it is my mouth I am opening now.
  2. Belief that I come back as a visitor, get out in the name of Jesus. Christ met the terms of this covenant and the Holy Spirit is its guarantee, and I am walking in through the door with nothing in my hands.
  3. Lord, You swore this covenant and You keep it, and You did not add a clause while I was away. I thank You, because Your Spirit is carrying the word from my mouth to You, and I am back.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
